Mumbai’s 2024 Housing Lottery Draws Unprecedented Interest: Over 1.34 Lakh Applications Received

Mumbai, September 25, 2024: The Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board (MHADA) has reported an extraordinary response to its 2024 housing lottery, attracting 1,34,350 applications for just 2,030 available flats. With 1,13,811 applicants confirming their participation through the submission of the Earnest Money Deposit (EMD), this year’s lottery showcases the high demand for affordable housing in the city.
The application window closed on September 19, 2024, at 11:59 PM, coinciding with the EMD payment deadline. The provisional list of eligible applicants is set to be published on MHADA’s official website at 6:00 PM on September 27, 2024. Applicants will have the opportunity to submit claims or objections until 12:00 PM on September 29, 2024, with the final list released on October 3, 2024.
A Transparent and Efficient Process
The registration process for this lottery began on August 9, 2024, utilizing the fully online IHLMS 2.0 system, which emphasizes transparency. Of the 2,030 tenements available, 1,327 are in newly constructed projects, while 370 units come from redevelopment schemes under various DCR categories. Additionally, 333 scattered units are from previous lotteries.
Diverse Demand Across Income Groups
Applications have poured in from all income categories. The Economically Weaker Section (EWS) saw 35,359 applications for 359 units, with 47,134 applicants confirming their participation. The Low-Income Group (LIG) submitted 61,571 applications for 627 units, while the Middle-Income Group (MIG) accounted for 14,293 applications for 768 units. The High-Income Group (HIG) received 7,493 applications for 276 units.
Notably, the Nehru Nagar, Kurla redevelopment project garnered immense interest, receiving 4,026 applications for just 14 flats, with 3,124 applicants completing the EMD process. Similarly, the Oshiwara project attracted 765 applications for a single unit, showcasing the competitive nature of the lottery.
Final Draw Scheduled for October 8, 2024
The strong interest in these housing options underscores MHADA’s vital role in tackling the ongoing housing crisis in Mumbai. The final lottery draw for flat allocation will take place on October 8, 2024, at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in South Mumbai, marking a significant step in fulfilling the housing needs of the city’s residents.
