Global technology leader Microsoft has reinforced its commitment to India’s burgeoning IT landscape with a substantial investment in Pune. According to Square Yards, Microsoft has acquired a prime land parcel in Pune’s Hinjewadi area for approximately Rs. 519.72 crore. This acquisition marks a significant expansion of Microsoft’s footprint in one of India’s key IT hubs.

Major Acquisition Details

The recent acquisition involved the purchase of 66,414.5 square meters (around 16.4 acres) from Indo Global Infotech City LLP, as documented in the registration papers reviewed by Square Yards. This high-profile transaction, which was officially registered in August 2024, saw the tech giant pay a stamp duty of Rs. 31.18 crore and a registration fee of Rs. 30,000.

Previous Investments Reflecting Broader Strategy

This new investment follows Microsoft’s 2022 acquisition of a 25-acre plot in Pimpri-Chinchwad for Rs. 328 crore and the recent purchase of 48 acres in Hyderabad for Rs. 267 crore. These transactions are part of Microsoft’s comprehensive strategy to bolster its presence in India, focusing particularly on expanding its data center operations. The company’s existing network of data centers includes locations in Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai, underscoring its strategic importance in the region.

A Growing Presence and Workforce

With over 23,000 employees across major Indian cities such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune, Microsoft is a significant player in the Indian IT sector. The company’s diverse teams are involved in various functions, including sales, marketing, research, development, and customer support.

In early 2024, Microsoft also launched the ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA initiative, part of its “Skills for Jobs” program. This ambitious project aims to train 2 million individuals in AI and digital skills by 2025, reflecting Microsoft’s commitment to developing a future-ready workforce in India.
