Instagram Introduces ‘Teen Accounts’ for Safer Social Media Use
Meta’s Latest Update Prioritizes Teen Safety with Parental Controls and Enhanced Privacy
Instagram has launched a new feature called Teen Accounts, aimed at creating a safer online environment for younger users. This update, automatically placing teens into accounts with built-in protections, is designed to address concerns from parents regarding the safety of their children on social media platforms.
Enhanced Safety for Teens
The new Teen Accounts provide a series of protections, limiting who can contact teens and the type of content they can see. Parents have the ability to control the strictness of these settings for teens under 16, while older teens will also have these safeguards in place by default.
Among the key features of Teen Accounts:
Private Accounts: Teens’ profiles will be private by default, meaning new followers need to be approved and strangers cannot see their content.
Messaging Restrictions: Only people teens already follow or are connected with can send them messages.
Sensitive Content Control: Teens will be automatically placed into the most restrictive setting for viewing sensitive content, such as graphic violence or cosmetic procedure promotions.
Limited Interactions: Teens can only be tagged or mentioned by people they follow, with an anti-bullying feature activated to filter offensive words and phrases.
Parental Control Over Teen Settings
For parents, Instagram has introduced new ways to oversee and regulate their child’s social media use. Teens under 16 will need parental permission to make any changes to the preset protections. Additionally, parents can now view who their child has messaged, set daily time limits, and block access to the app during certain times of the day. This increased level of supervision ensures that parents remain actively involved in their teens’ online activity.
Experts suggest these new features will ease the burden on parents who worry about their teens’ online experiences. As per experts, “These protections aim to help parents feel more secure about their teens’ online interactions, while giving teens a chance to engage in a safer, more positive digital environment.”
Adapting to Teen Development
Instagram acknowledges that different age groups require different levels of protection. For younger teens, the platform offers more stringent settings, while older teens have a bit more flexibility to explore. This age-appropriate approach takes into account the developmental stages of teens, ensuring that younger users remain safeguarded.
In response to parents’ ongoing concerns about inappropriate content, Instagram has introduced a system that further restricts teens from accessing sensitive or mature material. With these new controls, teens are less likely to encounter harmful content, with many potentially damaging posts being hidden from them entirely.
What’s Next?
The rollout of Teen Accounts has already begun, with teens in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia expected to transition into these new settings within the next 60 days. Users in the European Union and other regions can expect to see these changes implemented by next year. Additionally, Instagram plans to extend Teen Accounts to other Meta platforms in the near future, continuing its effort to enhance safety measures across its network.
Meta’s latest update has been widely welcomed, with experts in youth mental health praising the move. One expert noted, “By offering safety as a default setting, Meta reduces the burden on parents and ensures that teens can engage with social media in a safe, controlled environment.”
The move marks a significant shift in how Instagram and other Meta platforms approach teen safety, creating a balanced ecosystem where teens can explore their interests while still being protected from the potential risks of online spaces.
