India’s Outward Remittances Surge to Record High Amidst Travel Boom
July Sees $2.8 Billion in Remittances as Leisure Travel and Weddings Drive Spending
India has experienced a significant increase in outward remittances, reaching a remarkable $2.8 billion in July 2024, marking the highest level in the past ten months. This surge raises questions about the underlying reasons for such a spike. While many may assume that students are traveling abroad for education, the reality is quite different; the trend is largely driven by increased spending on leisure travel.
July is typically a month when foreign universities welcome summer admissions. However, this year’s figures tell a different story. Alongside remittances for educational purposes, substantial amounts were also sent for leisure travel and destination weddings. This dual trend has contributed to the impressive $2.8 billion in outward remittances.
During July, Indian travelers spent approximately $1.6 billion on overseas trips, up from $1.3 billion in June 2024. The average monthly spending during the first quarter of this year stood at $1.2 billion. Comparatively, this July’s total remittance amount reflects a 16.7% increase from the same period last year.
The government had initiated Tax Collection at Source (TDS) on foreign remittances starting October last year, leading to a slight dip in overseas spending earlier this calendar year. Consequently, monthly expenditures until July remained below last year’s average of $2.6 billion. Similarly, monthly travel spending post-October also fell short of the previous year’s average of $1.4 billion.
Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, the number of Indians spending money abroad has skyrocketed from $1 billion in FY 2014 to over $31.7 billion in FY 2024. This dramatic increase can be attributed to the growing number of Indians opting for international vacations and the rising popularity of studying abroad.
As India embraces a more global lifestyle, the surge in outward remittances underscores a notable shift in spending habits, reflecting a vibrant, travel-loving population eager to explore new destinations.
